Welcome to the "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" app, a pioneering project aimed at celebrating and spreading the rich cultural heritage of Devarattam, a traditional folk dance from Tamil Nadu. This app is dedicated to the legends of Devarattam, honoring the invaluable contributions of Kalaimamani awardees Mr. M. Kumararaman, a retired teacher, Kalaimani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, who have been recognized with the prestigious KALAIMAMANI, KALAIMANI, and USTAD BISMILLAH KHAN YUVA PURASKAR awards, respectively. Their dedication to the art form has been a guiding light for this project. Additionally, this app is a tribute to my guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and other beloved legends of Devarattam.
Devarattam, performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, both in ancient times and today, is a vibrant display of cultural expression. The dance is characterized by a repertoire of 32 to 72 steps, with the 32 steps serving as the foundational moves, and the others being variations of these basic steps. Dancers of Devarattam captivate audiences by holding a kerchief in each hand, wearing Salangai on each leg, and skillfully performing to the rhythm of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument integral to the dance.
Through this app, my goal is to not only preserve and showcase the beauty of Devarattam but also to highlight the achievements of its distinguished awardees, ensuring their legacy inspires future generations to appreciate and engage with this magnificent art form.
