Hanafuda Koikoi is a traditional Japanese card game, and this is the English version of Hanafuda Koi-Koi.
Koi-Koi (Japanese: こいこい) is a widely enjoyed card game in Japan that utilizes Hanafuda cards. It is one of the popular ways to play Hanafuda, which are traditional Japanese playing cards, and is typically played with two players.
The primary goal of the game is to form combinations of cards, known as "yaku," more quickly than your opponent. The phrase "koi-koi," meaning "come on" in Japanese, is used when a player decides to continue playing the current hand.
The objective is to accumulate cards in a point pile to create these special yaku combinations. Players can add cards to their point piles by matching cards from their hands or those drawn from the draw pile with cards already on the table. After forming a yaku, a player has the option to stop and collect points, or to continue playing (known as "koi-koi," which is where the game gets its name) to attempt forming additional yaku for higher scores. While the point values on individual cards do not directly impact the score, they are useful for assessing their potential in forming yaku.
