A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer GBA and DS ports exist on the Switch compared to other consoles. This list highlights ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – found outside the Nintendo Switch Online app. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison, offering a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
The Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, but its true successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of a superb side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry has some rough edges. These are smoothed out in later installments, but this is the perfect starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Battle Network offer vastly different gameplay. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in the Battle Network series see diminishing returns, this first game is a must-play.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a treasure trove, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is addictive. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae as a console mainstay. Its origins are rooted in an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon and might warrant inclusion on a future list.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title (its origins), Ace Attorney is a fantastic adventure game. Blending investigations and dramatic courtroom scenes, it features quirky humor and compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, though later installments are equally strong.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating and underrated DS title.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, the Switch version is a solid alternative if you lack a working DS. A truly exceptional game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection compiles all DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three DS games in this collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch port is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
