2XKO: The Future of Tag-Team Fighters

by Camila Dec 30,2024

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize tag-team fighting games. This article explores its innovative features and the recently released playable demo.

Redefining Tag-Team Combat

2XKO Gameplay

2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the traditional 2v2 format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches (2v2), or even intense 2v1 showdowns. Each team consists of a "Point" character and an "Assist" character.

The tag system offers three key mechanics:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character can call upon the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist characters instantly switch roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos.

Unlike many tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. Even defeated champions can still function as Assists.

Strategic Synergy: The Fuse System

Beyond character selection and customization, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—team-based synergy options that alter gameplay. The demo featured five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks unleash devastating combos.
  • FURY: Below 40% health, gain bonus damage and a special dash cancel.
  • FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Empower your partner with multiple assist actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's role in enhancing player expression and enabling powerful coordinated attacks.

Champion Roster and Alpha Playtest

2XKO Character Select

The playable demo featured six champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with moves faithful to their League of Legends counterparts. While Jinx and Katarina were previously shown, they are not included in the initial Alpha Lab Playtest, but their inclusion is planned for the future.

2XKO is a free-to-play title launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. An Alpha Lab Playtest ran from August 8th to 19th, offering early access to the game. Registration details were available via the linked article (not included here).
