In the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid, securing your shelter is paramount. While finding a safe haven is relatively straightforward, keeping the undead hordes at bay requires strategic defense. This guide details how to effectively barricade windows, a crucial step in fortifying your base.
How to Secure Your Windows in Project Zomboid
To board up a window, gather the necessary materials: one wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you have these items, right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.
Hammers and nails are typically found in locations like toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Planks are commonly located at construction sites, or can be salvaged by breaking down wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.) in a pinch. Administrators can use the "/additem" command to spawn these items.
Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie entry compared to unguarded windows. Multiple planks increase the time it takes for zombies to breach the defenses. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to do this.
Larger furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) cannot be used as effective barricades; players and zombies will pass right through them. However, knowing how to move furniture is still useful for interior design.
While stronger barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets (requiring sufficient Metalworking skill), the wooden plank method provides a readily accessible and effective initial defense.
