Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works at Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar is reportedly in talks for a recurring appearance.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center around a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as Buffy.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight vampires and other supernatural creatures. She was aided by friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles.
The series ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), spawning the Angel spin-off and continuing its story through official comic books.
