This LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is substantial: 21 inches high and 16 inches wide—roughly 60% the size of the original painting. Its impressive scale elevates it beyond a mere toy; it's a piece of art intended for display. This reflects LEGO's ongoing transition from a children's toy to a sophisticated adult hobby.

Vincent van Gogh created his iconic Sunflowers series while residing in Arles, France, a highly productive period in his artistic journey. He deeply connected with the sunflower, viewing it as a symbol of gratitude and a powerful artistic muse. As he wrote to a friend:
"If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."
In August 1888, he painted four sunflower versions. He revisited the motif in January 1889, producing a repetition of the third and two more of the fourth.

The fourth version and its repetitions are the most renowned. The original (F454) is at London's National Gallery; one repetition (F457) resides in Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art; and the other (F458), perhaps the most iconic due to its vibrant colors, is housed in Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum.
Established in 1973, the Van Gogh Museum collaborated with LEGO to create this tribute to F458. The three-dimensional relief cleverly uses abstract pieces to emulate van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.

The 34 numbered bags and instruction booklet (including a QR code linking to a podcast about van Gogh) provide a structured build. The construction cleverly mirrors the real-world process: first, the frame, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas within the frame using pins. This adds a satisfying sense of accomplishment and authenticity.
A delightful Easter egg is cleverly incorporated: the canvas is initially built as one piece, then a separate strip is added at the top with pins, mirroring an actual extension Van Gogh made to the original painting. LEGO used brown bricks to realistically depict the wood.

This subtle detail, invisible to casual observers, is a rewarding touch for the builder, reflecting the effort and artistry involved in creating a masterpiece.
Building the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, but this mirrors the dedication of the original artist. Take your time; this isn't a race.

The wilting and profile flowers initially seem random, but upon stepping back, their placement becomes clear and adds to the overall effect.
The completed set's placement is obvious: on a wall. This forethought enhances the building experience and ensures long-term enjoyment. Even a week after completion, the three-dimensional details continue to delight. This is a superb LEGO set, highly recommended.
LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, Set #31215, retails for $199.99 and contains 2615 pieces. It's available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
