Captain America: Brave New World's box office performance is raising concerns. While it's nearing $300 million globally, a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend threatens its profitability.
According to Deadline, the film's $180 million production budget necessitates a $425 million global gross to break even. Its strong Presidents Day weekend opening ($100 million domestically) was followed by a considerably weaker second weekend ($28.2 million domestically), mirroring the disappointing performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.
After two weekends, Comscore reports a global gross of approximately $289.4 million ($141.2 million domestic, $148.2 million international), with a worldwide second-weekend haul of $63.5 million. Despite being the biggest 2025 theatrical release to date, the steep second-weekend decline has surprised analysts. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore commented to Variety that this significant drop reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically expected from Marvel films, suggesting a "new normal" for the franchise. Deadline projects a final global gross of around $450 million.
The film's launch coincided with largely negative critical reception. IGN's review awarded it a 5/10, criticizing its lack of originality and impact despite strong performances from the cast.
Marvel Studios and Disney are hoping for a substantial box office rebound to counter the recent underperformance of MCU films (excluding last year's successful Deadpool & Wolverine), and to build momentum for upcoming releases like Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
