Marvel Comics is gearing up to relaunch its monthly Captain America series with a fresh creative team and an exciting new narrative that delves into Steve Rogers' earliest days post-suspended animation. This eagerly anticipated series will even feature the inaugural encounter between Captain America and the formidable Doctor Doom.
The announcement, made at the ComicsPro retailer convention, highlights the new creative team: writer Chip Zdarsky, known for his work on Batman and Daredevil, and artist Valerio Schiti, acclaimed for G.O.D.S. and The Avengers. The duo will be joined by colorist Frank D'Armata, marking a reunion of the team that previously collaborated on the 2017 series Marvel 2-in-One.

The series kicks off shortly after Steve Rogers is revived in the modern Marvel era. Reenlisting with the US Army, Captain America's initial mission involves teaming up with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate Latveria, now under the control of a young and ambitious Doctor Doom. While the narrative will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel Universe, the events of this initial arc will significantly impact the ongoing story crafted by Zdarsky and Schiti.
“I’ve been a huge Captain America fan for decades. Writing the seasoned, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight was a joy, so taking on the actual Captain America title feels like a dream come true!” Zdarsky shared in a statement. “We’re diving into Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I believe will truly surprise our readers! I’m thrilled to bring this story to life with Valerio and Frank’s incredible art!”
Zdarsky further elaborated, “My approach to this series mirrors my work on Daredevil, focusing deeply on understanding Cap’s mindset and presenting a grounded, human perspective on who he is in this new world. Steve Rogers embodies the best of humanity, and I want that to shine through on every page.”
“Captain America is one of my all-time favorite characters,” Schiti remarked. “Reuniting with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after our work on Marvel 2-In-One is a delight, and we're crafting a story that beautifully balances heart, action, and entertainment! But what's most exciting and unexpected is how much I've found myself focusing on Steve Rogers, the man behind the shield.”
Schiti continued, “Chip’s script is so engaging and compelling that I’m confident readers will be drawn deep into Steve’s heart and soul. He’s the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought in a war against Nazism, 'died' in that war, and was revived to continue his duty. At the time we're exploring, he’s only in his late twenties, carrying immense pressure and responsibility.”
Captain America #1 is set to hit the shelves on July 2, 2025.
