Capcom has unveiled a remastered edition of the original Dead Rising game, marking a return for the franchise after a lengthy hiatus. The last main Dead Rising title launched in 2016, following several Xbox 360 installments and the somewhat divisive Dead Rising 4 for Xbox One. This lull likely stemmed from the mixed reception of Dead Rising 4, resulting in the franchise being put on hold.
While the original Dead Rising debuted exclusively on Xbox 360 in 2006, an enhanced version later appeared across major platforms in anticipation of Dead Rising 4. Meanwhile, Capcom focused its efforts on the highly successful Resident Evil franchise, releasing acclaimed remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4, alongside new mainline entries like Resident Evil Village. This success likely overshadowed Dead Rising for several years.
Now, eight years after the last installment, Capcom has announced "Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster," revealed through a brief YouTube trailer showcasing the game's opening sequence. While details on platforms and release date remain scarce, a 2024 launch is anticipated.
Capcom's Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster: A Fresh Look
Despite a 2016 enhancement for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, this remaster promises improved visuals and performance. The announcement sparks speculation about potential remasters of subsequent Dead Rising titles, some over a decade old. However, given Capcom's apparent focus on remastering rather than completely rebuilding the games, the likelihood of full-scale Resident Evil-style remakes seems low. Capcom's proven success with Resident Evil remakes likely makes them prioritize that franchise, avoiding potential complications of simultaneously working on two zombie-themed remake projects. The possibility of a Dead Rising 5, however, remains a strong prospect.
2024 has already seen several successful remasters and remakes, including Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and others. If released this year, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster would join other Xbox 360-era titles receiving the remaster treatment, such as Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP.
