Destiny 2's Bungie Name Glitch: A Mass Username Overhaul
Bungie to Issue Name Change Tokens
Following a recent game update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their account names (Bungie Names) had been inexplicably altered. Numerous players reported their names being replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This issue, which began affecting players around August 14th, stemmed from a malfunction in Bungie's name moderation system.
Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating: "We're tracking an issue where a large number of account names have been changed by our Bungie name moderation tool. We're actively investigating and will provide an update tomorrow, including details on additional name change tokens for all players."
Bungie's system typically alters names violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected many players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same name since 2015.
Bungie swiftly investigated and reported the following day that they had identified and resolved the underlying issue, preventing further accidental name changes. Their Twitter (X) update read: "We've identified the root cause of the widespread Bungie name changes. A server-side fix has been implemented to prevent further issues."
They confirmed their intention to distribute name change tokens to all players as compensation. "As announced yesterday, we'll be providing name change tokens to all players. Further details to follow."
Affected players are urged to remain patient and await further communication from Bungie regarding the distribution of name change tokens.
