Snow White, the latest live-action remake from Disney directed by Marc Webb, known for The Amazing Spider-Man films, had a challenging opening weekend at the box office. According to Comscore, the film managed to pull in $43 million domestically, marking the second-highest debut of 2025 so far, trailing only behind the MCU's Captain America: Brave New World. Despite topping this week's chart, Snow White's opening fell short of the $45 million launch of the live-action Dumbo in 2019 and didn't meet pre-release expectations.
To put things into perspective, other Disney remakes like 2019's The Lion King, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2016's The Jungle Book, and 2023's The Little Mermaid all boasted opening weekends exceeding $100 million domestically. Internationally, Snow White's performance was similarly subdued, with an opening weekend of $44.3 million, bringing its global total to $87.3 million.
This live-action adaptation of Disney's 1937 animated classic features Rachel Zegler, a musical veteran, in the titular role, and Gal Gadot, known for her role in Wonder Woman, as the Evil Queen. With a reported production budget exceeding $250 million, Snow White faces a steep climb to profitability, especially factoring in marketing expenses.
However, there's a glimmer of hope for Snow White. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to their Lion King remake, started with a modest $35.4 million domestic opening in December but ultimately grossed over $717 million worldwide. Disney is undoubtedly hoping Snow White can follow a similar path to become a sleeper hit, amid ongoing scrutiny over the performance of Captain America: Brave New World, which has earned $400.8 million globally after six weekends.
IGN's review of Snow White scored it a 7/10, noting that "Snow White is a live-action Disney remake that meaningfully adapts its original, rather than creating a lesser mimicry."
