Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, once poised to retire, has reignited his passion for game development with a new project inspired by the legendary Final Fantasy 6. Dive into the details of his latest endeavor and the ongoing development process.
The Successor to Final Fantasy 6
After the success of his latest game, Fantasian Neo Dimension, released in 2021, Hironobu Sakaguchi is now set on creating a new game that he envisions as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy 6. In a revealing interview with The Verge, Sakaguchi confessed that Fantasian was intended to be his swan song. Yet, the joy of working with his talented team on Fantasian has compelled him to embark on this new journey. "We aim to craft something that feels both nostalgic and fresh," Sakaguchi shared, describing the project as "part two of my farewell note."
Development on Sakaguchi's Latest Project
In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi disclosed that he's been working on this new project for about a year, having completed the script. He anticipates reaching a significant milestone within the next two years. The filing of a trademark for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker in June 2024 has sparked speculation about a potential sequel to Fantasian. While Sakaguchi confirmed the project's direction towards fantasy RPGs, no official title or detailed information has been released yet.
Reuniting with Square Enix for FANTASIAN Neo Dimension
Mistwalker's collaboration with Square Enix brought FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to a broader audience on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. Originally an Apple Arcade exclusive, Fantasian received high acclaim and was hailed as one of the best titles on the platform. Reflecting on his return to Square Enix, where his career began in 1983, Sakaguchi noted, "Coming full circle with the game I thought would be my last was a truly fascinating experience."
Throughout his tenure at Square, now Square Enix, Sakaguchi directed the first five Final Fantasy titles and produced Final Fantasy 6 through 11. After leaving in 2003 to establish Mistwalker, he developed notable games like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. Fantasian marked his return to the spotlight in 2021, followed by the enhanced FANTASIAN Neo Dimension in 2024. Despite this recent partnership, Sakaguchi has expressed that he has no interest in revisiting Final Fantasy or his past works, preferring to enjoy them as a consumer rather than a creator.
