PlayStation Productions Unveils Ambitious Slate of Game Adaptations at CES 2025
PlayStation Productions made a significant splash at CES 2025, announcing a diverse range of video game adaptations slated for release in 2025 and beyond. The January 7th presentation showcased projects spanning various genres and formats.
New Adaptations Announced:
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime Series: A new anime series based on the popular Ghost of Tsushima multiplayer mode, Legends, is in development with Crunchyroll and Aniplex. Directed by Takanobu Mizumo and with story composition by Gen Urobuchi, the series is set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. Sony Music will handle the music and soundtrack.
- Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 Films: PlayStation Productions, in collaboration with Sony Pictures (for Horizon Zero Dawn) and Columbia Pictures (Helldivers 2), revealed that film adaptations of these popular titles are underway. Details remain scarce.
-
Until Dawn Film Adaptation: A film adaptation of Until Dawn is set for release on April 25, 2025.
-
The Last of Us Season Two: Neil Druckmann, alongside a brief mention of Naughty Dog's upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, unveiled a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, which will adapt the storyline from The Last of Us Part II, introducing characters like Abby and Dina.
Previous Adaptations and Ongoing Projects:
PlayStation Productions' history of video game adaptations includes both successes and less-well-received projects. While earlier adaptations like Resident Evil and Silent Hill generated significant box office revenue, more recent ventures like Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023) have achieved both critical and commercial success. The Twisted Metal series, while not universally praised, completed production on its second season in late 2024 (release date pending).
Beyond the CES announcements, PlayStation Productions continues work on film adaptations of Days Gone and a sequel to the Uncharted film, as well as a God of War television series.
The expanding portfolio of PlayStation Productions demonstrates a clear commitment to bringing beloved video game franchises to new audiences through diverse media. The success of these adaptations will likely influence future projects and the selection of additional franchises for adaptation.
