Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein may rival that of the iconic Dr. Frankenstein himself. During the Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director unveiled tantalizing details about his eagerly anticipated adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic tale. Although a trailer won't be released until this summer, Netflix offered a glimpse into the film with a first-look image featuring Oscar Isaac as the legendary mad scientist.
"This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years," del Toro shared in a video message, as reported by Variety. "I've been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards the extensive collection of Frankenstein memorabilia in his renowned Bleak House, highlighting his deep connection to the story.
Del Toro also teased some exclusive footage that showcased Oscar Isaac's portrayal of Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, who plays a seemingly affluent aristocrat. Additionally, viewers got a sneak peek at Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster, characterized by long black hair, stitched gray skin, and a striking glint of red in his eyes. Unfortunately, this footage is not currently available online.
"You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography," del Toro reflected. "It doesn't get more personal than this." His dedication to bringing Frankenstein to life underscores a lifelong journey, one that has been anything but quick.
Del Toro's history with the project is a testament to his unwavering commitment. From the visionary behind Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy, this adaptation promises to be a deeply personal exploration of the Frankenstein mythos, eagerly awaited by fans and cinephiles alike.
