NetEase's collectible card RPG, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29th, 2024. While this marks the end for players in these regions, the game will continue to operate in Asia and select MENA territories.
Initially launched in China in September 2021, the game enjoyed early success. A global launch followed in June 2022, but after a period of strong pre-registrations, the game's momentum faltered.
The decision to end service in certain regions stems from the game's underperformance. While its unique blend of Clash Royale-style gameplay and the Harry Potter universe initially captivated players, the game's popularity waned. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration with changes to the reward system, which many felt unfairly favored paying players over skilled, free-to-play users. These changes, including nerfs and slower progression for non-spending players, contributed to the game's decline.
The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions. Players in other regions still have the opportunity to experience the game's Hogwarts-inspired world, including dorm life, classes, secrets, and wizard duels.
