NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Potential Bans
NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing mods. The company explicitly stated that any modification of the game, regardless of whether it's cosmetic or provides gameplay advantages, violates the terms of service and risks a permanent ban.
This warning follows the release of Marvel Rivals Season 1, which introduced hero balance adjustments, two new playable Fantastic Four members (Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic), and a hidden anti-modding mechanism. Despite this, resourceful modders quickly found workarounds. Reports from IGN detail a Nexus Mods add-on that bypasses the game's asset hash checks, allowing modifications to persist. One such mod, created by user Prafit, even garnered over 500 downloads before this warning was issued. Another mod, created by Ercuallo and shared on Twitter by RivalsLeaks, showcased a humorous alteration transforming Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy.
While NetEase Games hasn't publicly confirmed any bans for modding yet, the company maintains its zero-tolerance policy towards modifications, cheats, and hacks. Although some mods, including one featuring US President-elect Donald Trump, have been removed from Nexus Mods, Prafit's workaround remains available.
The situation highlights the ongoing conflict between developers striving to maintain game integrity and players seeking to customize their experience. NetEase Games' clear message underscores the potential consequences of violating the terms of service, leaving the future impact of this warning yet to be seen. Marvel Rivals, nominated for Online Game of the Year at the upcoming DICE Awards 2025, continues to be a popular title, and this issue adds another layer of complexity to its ongoing success.
