In Path of Exile 2, the Atlas map offers four exciting endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. The Expedition system, originally from the Expedition League in the first Path of Exile, has been integrated into PoE 2 as a thrilling endgame feature. This comprehensive guide will walk you through finding and initiating an Expedition, mastering the Detonator and Explosives, navigating the Delirium Passive Skill Tree, and uncovering the unique rewards available in this dynamic PoE 2 system.
PoE 2 Expedition & Detonation Mechanic, Explained
On the Atlas screen, map nodes guaranteed to host an endgame event are marked with specific icons. Expeditions are identified by a light blue icon featuring a spiral-like design. To ensure an Expedition encounter, use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot on the Atlas screen.
Once you load into a map with an Expedition, search for an area covered in Markers and a tent where one of four NPCs will introduce you to the event's basics. The heart of the Expedition involves a Detonator and Explosives, which you'll manage from a new UI element at the bottom-right of your screen. Your objective is to strategically place Explosives to trigger Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.
Runic Monsters: Triggered by Explosives near Red Markers. Larger Markers result in larger Runic Monster packs, empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
Unearthed Remnants: Identified by a tooltip above a relic on the ground. They provide both beneficial and negative modifiers, such as increased Elemental damage from monsters but also enhanced item Rarity from Excavated Chests.
Excavated Chests: Spawned by Explosives near Black Markers with the spiral Expedition symbol. These contain event-specific rewards like Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful Currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.
To interact with the environment, click the Explosives button and hover over the area to see the effect radius. Place Explosives to cover Markers within the green circle without overlapping for optimal farming. After placing your Explosives, return to the Detonator to activate them, spawning empowered Runic Monsters and starting the event.
If you die, the map resets, but you can retreat from an overwhelming Expedition and return later. A strategic approach is to Detonate your Explosives, retreat, and then come back to tackle the empowered enemies with powerful AoE abilities.
Expedition Pinnacle Map
Expedition encounters may yield Expedition Logbooks from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests. Take these Logbooks to Dannig in your Hideout to unlock the Expedition Map. Slot the Logbook into the bottom slot and click "Open Portals" to access a vast Expedition event with significantly more Explosives.
The Expedition Pinnacle Map system includes its own Pinnacle Boss, Olroth. While Olroth doesn't always appear, higher-level maps increase the likelihood of his spawn. Look for a skull on the minimap to locate Olroth, and strategically place your Explosives to reach this area.
Defeating Olroth grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, crucial for enhancing your Expedition experience. These points can be used in a dedicated section of the Atlas Passive Skill Tree to improve your event rewards.
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Access the Expedition Passive Skill Tree through the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu. This tree offers modifiers that enhance Expedition Currency rewards, boost Monster spawns, and amplify Remnant effects.
To view your Expedition passives, open your Atlas Map, select the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu on the top-left, and find the blue spiral section in the top right. This section includes eight Notable nodes and eight nodes that increase Logbook and Olroth difficulty.
You earn 2x Expedition Passive Skill points for defeating Olroth, allowing you to progressively increase the event's difficulty and unlock more powerful Notable nodes.
Notable Expedition Passive | Effect | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1 total, but gives it a 150% boost to radius, 100% boost to placement range, and 20% less enemy Life | N / A |
Disturbed Rest | Maps contain 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N / A |
Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks will drop by Runic Monsters, and Logbooks will always spawn with 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts will drop from Runic Monsters, and Detonation chains travel 50% faster | N / A |
Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters in Expeditions, 50% more Exotic Coinage drops from Runic Monsters | Timed Detonations |
Frail Treasures | Expeditions always contain 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds | N / A |
Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N / A |
Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
For optimal rewards, focus on 'Disturbed Rest', 'Detailed Records', and 'Timed Detonations' first. These nodes significantly boost your rewards without major downsides. Then, consider 'Weight of History', 'Unearthed Anomalies', and 'Legendary Battles' for even greater rewards, though they increase event difficulty. Avoid 'Extreme Archaeology' due to its drastic reduction in Explosives, which limits your total rewards and can be costly to respec.
PoE 2 Expedition Event Rewards
### Artifacts & Coinage Currencies Are Used For Purchasing Gear
The main rewards from Expeditions are Artifacts, which come in four types and can be amassed like other Currencies. Each type is used to trade with a specific Expedition vendor for unique types of Gear.
Reward | ![]() | Black Scythe Artifact | Order Artifact | Sun Artifact | Exotic Coinage |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Use | Used for trade with Gwennen | Used for trade with Tujen | Used for trade with Rog | Used for trade with Dannig | Refreshes the inventory of any Expedition vendor |
Gear | Weapons | Belts and Jewelry | Armor | Used to acquire other Artifacts | N / A |
Each Expedition features one of these vendors, allowing access to their specific inventory. Artifacts remain in your inventory post-map, so carry them to Expedition Maps for trading. Additionally, Exotic Coinage can be obtained to refresh any Expedition vendor's inventory.
Expedition Logbooks Open A Unique Expedition Map To Progress
Expedition Logbooks, dropped by Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock special Expedition Maps when taken to Dannig. These maps offer a chance to encounter the Pinnacle Boss, Olroth. Defeating Olroth provides 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, high-tier Currency, and a chance at exclusive Uniques. Increasing map and Logbook difficulty boosts Olroth's spawn rate and enhances the rewards upon his defeat.
