Despite a Season 1 crackdown, Marvel Rivals players continue to risk account bans by using mods. Since the game's successful December launch, custom skins created via mods have been popular, transforming characters like Iron Man into Vegeta and Mantis into a goth. One mod even turns Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita.
NetEase, the developer, implemented asset hash checking with Season 1, explicitly stating in their terms of service and to IGN that mods, cheats, and other unauthorized third-party software are prohibited. Warnings against modding were previously issued, and NetEase reiterated the risk of bans.
However, a workaround has emerged and is spreading online. While more complex than previous methods, it remains accessible to many PC players. Nexus Mods user Prafit, who shared a workaround, cautioned users about the risk of bans, noting that while permanent bans haven't been observed, NetEase could still take action.
New mods utilizing the Fantastic Four characters have already appeared, such as one transforming Mister Fantastic into Luffy from One Piece, which boasts over 5,000 downloads in just two days.
The uncertainty remains: will NetEase follow through on its ban threats? No confirmed ban for mod use has surfaced yet, but the workaround's popularity might trigger further action.
NetEase's motivation for banning mods likely stems from potential revenue loss from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, and the impact mods could have on game balance and performance. Prafit even advised that their workaround requires a high-spec PC.
