In the sprawling world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a monumental task. Luckily, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details how to hotwire cars and level up the necessary skills.
Hotwiring a car is surprisingly simple, requiring only a few button presses. However, prerequisites exist. While not demanding a top-tier character build, specific skills are necessary.
Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid
Successfully hotwiring allows you to drive a vehicle as long as it has fuel and is in good condition, regardless of possessing the keys. To hotwire, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession at character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
After completing these steps, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills:
For those not starting as a Burglar, skill progression requires in-game activities:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines found in homes and businesses also provide skill boosts. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP. Remember to use the appropriate tools (screwdriver, etc.) and right-click on vehicle parts, selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" to remove them.
