Forza Horizon 3's Online Functionality Remains Active Despite Delisting
Contrary to expectations, Forza Horizon 3's online services persist, even after the game's removal from digital storefronts in 2020. This positive development follows concerns raised by players experiencing service disruptions. A Playground Games community manager confirmed a server reboot, addressing these issues and demonstrating the studio's ongoing commitment to maintaining online functionality. This is a welcome contrast to the permanent shutdown of online services for Forza Horizon and Forza Horizon 2 following their delistings.
The Forza franchise, launched in 2005 with Forza Motorsport, has seen significant growth, culminating in the recent success of Forza Horizon 5. Released in 2021, Forza Horizon 5 boasts over 40 million players, solidifying its place as a major Xbox title. This success, however, didn't prevent controversy surrounding its exclusion from the Best Ongoing Game category at The Game Awards 2024. Despite this, Forza Horizon 5 continues to receive substantial post-launch content and updates, including the popular Hide and Seek mode.
Recent Reddit discussions highlighted player concerns regarding Forza Horizon 3's online services. A post questioning the game's future prompted a reassuring response from Playground Games' senior community manager. The manager confirmed the server reboot, effectively quelling fears of an imminent service termination. It's noteworthy that Forza Horizon 3 reached its "End of Life" status in 2020, meaning its removal from the Microsoft Store.
The Delisting of Forza Horizon 4 in December 2024 also sparked concern within the Forza community. Despite the game's immense popularity (over 24 million players since its 2018 launch), its delisting underscored the uncertainty surrounding the longevity of online services for older titles. Playground Games' swift response to Forza Horizon 3's issues, however, offers a positive counterpoint, highlighting their dedication to player experience and the revitalization of online traffic following the server maintenance.
Forza Horizon 5's remarkable success, with its 40 million-plus player base, sets a high bar for future installments. Speculation is already rife regarding Forza Horizon 6, with many players hoping for a Japan setting. While Playground Games is currently focused on other projects, including the anticipated Fable title, the future of the Forza Horizon series remains bright.
