Stardew Valley: How The Friendship Point System Works

by Gabriella Jan 24,2025

This Stardew Valley guide explains how to maximize friendship with villagers. Building relationships is crucial for integrating into Pelican Town, whether aiming for friendship or romance. While talking, gifting, and dialogue choices impact friendship, not all actions are equal.

The Heart Scale:

Heart Scale

The in-game heart menu shows friendship levels (hearts) with each NPC. Reaching certain heart levels unlocks events, mail, and dialogue. However, the heart scale doesn't fully detail friendship point acquisition.

Friendship Points:

250 friendship points equal one heart. Interactions (talking, gifting) affect points. Positive actions earn points; ignoring or performing negative actions decrease friendship.

Boosting Friendship Gain:

The "Friendship 101" book (Prize Machine, Year 3 Bookseller – 9% chance, 20,000g) grants a permanent 10% friendship point bonus. It doesn't affect friendship decreases.

Point Values for Interactions:

Everyday Interactions

  • Talking: +20 (or +10 if the character is busy). Not talking results in a -2 (or -10 with a bouquet, -20 for spouse) daily decrease.
  • Bulletin Board Deliveries: +150 with the recipient.

Giving Gifts

  • Loved Gifts: +80 points
  • Liked Gifts: +45 points
  • Neutral Gifts: +20 points
  • Disliked Gifts: -20 points
  • Hated Gifts: -40 points

Winter Star Festival gifts multiply points by 5x; birthday gifts by 8x.

Stardrop Tea

Stardrop Tea (image of Stardrop Tea) grants +250 points (one heart), tripled for birthdays/Winter Star. It bypasses daily/weekly gift limits. Sources include the Prize Machine, Golden Fishing Chests, Helper's Bundle, and high-level raccoon requests.

Movie Theater

Movie dates (image of Movie Ticket) offer varying points based on movie and concession choices.

Conversations & Dialogue

Dialogue choices can yield +10 to +50 points or decrease friendship. Heart Events offer similar opportunities for significant point gains or losses.

Festivals & Events:

Flower Dance

  • Flower Dance: +1 heart (≥4 hearts required).
  • Luau: Soup contributions yield varying points.
  • Community Center (Bulletin Board): Completing all bundles grants +500 points (2 hearts) with each non-dateable villager.

This comprehensive guide provides strategies for building strong relationships in Stardew Valley. Remember to consider individual villager preferences for optimal results.
