Arctic Hazard unveils Norse, a new strategy game reminiscent of XCOM, but set against the backdrop of Viking-era Norway. The game promises a historically accurate and immersive world, achieved in part by enlisting award-winning author Giles Kristian to craft its compelling narrative.
The gaming landscape is replete with medieval fantasy settings. Fans of medieval European nobility-focused games might consider titles like Manor Lords and Medieval Dynasty, both incorporating survival elements. Others offer the chance to command Roman legions and shape the destinies of historical figures in grand battles, such as Imperator: Rome. However, Vikings consistently feature prominently in the gaming world.
Norse is a turn-based strategy title, echoing the XCOM formula, but within a Viking Norway setting. Players assume the role of Gunnar, a young warrior whose path is intertwined with betrayal and vengeance. Gunnar's quest involves hunting down Steinarr Far-Spear, the murderer of his father and fellow countrymen, while simultaneously building a settlement and assembling a formidable Viking army. Unlike the construction and exploration-focused survival game Valheim, Norse emphasizes narrative-driven gameplay.
Norse: A New Viking Strategy Game in the Style of XCOM
To guarantee historical authenticity and an engaging story, Arctic Hazard partnered with Giles Kristian, a prize-winning, Sunday Times best-selling author, to pen the game's script. Kristian, with over a million books sold and more than six Viking-themed novels under his belt, lends his expertise to the project. The game's trailer showcases the developer's commitment to accurately depicting Norway, aiming to create a truly memorable Viking experience.
Further gameplay details are available on Arctic Hazard's website. Players will manage a village, overseeing the production and upgrades of Viking warrior equipment. Each unit in Norse boasts customization options and distinct classes, including the Berserker, a damage-dealing whirlwind of fury, and the Bogmathr, ranged archers specializing in eliminating foes from a distance.
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, Norse is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Those interested can add Norse to their Steam wishlists; however, a release date has yet to be announced.
