For our last full controller review on TouchArcade, I've been extensively testing the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition on my PC, Steam Deck, PS5, and PS4 Pro over the past month. My curiosity was piqued by its modular design and the promise of a "Pro" experience, especially after my positive experiences with the Xbox Elite and DualSense Edge controllers.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller – What's in the Box
Unlike typical controllers that come with just a cable and perhaps a charging stand, the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition is a comprehensive package. You receive the controller, a braided cable, a high-quality protective case, a specialized fightpad module for fighting games, two gates, two replacement analog stick caps, two d-pad caps, a screwdriver, and a blue wireless USB dongle. Everything is neatly organized within the sturdy case, which itself sports a premium feel. The items in this edition are themed to match the Tekken 8 Rage Art aesthetic, although official replacements are not yet available.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Compatibility
The controller officially supports PS5, PS4, and PC. Intrigued by its compatibility with Steam Deck, I set it to PS5 mode and used the dongle with my Steam Deck Docking Station. It worked seamlessly without needing any updates. For console use, the same dongle is necessary for wireless play, toggling between PS4 and PS5 modes. It's been a valuable asset for testing games across my PS4 Pro and PS5.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Features
The standout feature of the Victrix Pro BFG is its modularity, allowing for symmetric and asymmetric stick layouts, a dedicated fightpad for fighting games, and customizable triggers, thumbsticks, and d-pads. This flexibility enables tailored configurations for various games, enhancing gameplay. For example, I used the symmetric layout for Katamari Damacy Reroll and switched to an asymmetric layout for DOOM Eternal. Adjustable trigger stops are perfect for fine-tuning between racing games and shooters. The controller offers multiple d-pad options, though I prefer the default diamond shape for most games.
However, as an officially licensed PS5 and PS4 controller, it lacks rumble, haptic feedback, adaptive trigger support, and gyro/motion control. The absence of rumble is particularly disappointing, especially given the presence of this feature in less expensive controllers. The controller includes four paddle-like buttons, which I've mapped to enhance my gameplay in titles like Monster Hunter World.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Look and Feel
Aesthetically, the controller's vibrant colors and Tekken 8 branding are visually appealing, though not as sleek as the standard black model. The feel is comfortable, though it's lighter than I prefer. The materials range from premium to satisfactory, and while it doesn't match the luxurious feel of the DualSense Edge, its ergonomic grip allows for extended play sessions without fatigue.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller on PS5
On the PS5, keep in mind that while it's an officially licensed controller, it can't power on the console. It also misses out on haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and gyro support. However, it fully supports the touchpad and all necessary buttons, including the share button.
Victrix Pro BFG on Steam Deck
The Victrix Pro BFG works flawlessly out of the box on the Steam Deck when paired with the docking station. It's recognized as a PS5 controller, with the share button functioning for screenshots and the touchpad working as intended in games with PlayStation controller support.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Battery Life
The controller boasts exceptional battery life, significantly outlasting the DualSense and DualSense Edge. A low battery indicator on the touchpad is a convenient feature, especially for extended play on the Steam Deck.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Software
I was unable to test the software due to its availability only on the Microsoft Store, which I don't use. Fortunately, the controller works seamlessly with Steam Deck, PS5, and PS4. I attempted to use it with iOS devices but was unsuccessful.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Negatives
The controller faces some significant drawbacks: no rumble, a low polling rate, lack of Hall Effect sensors in the standard package, and the necessity of a dongle for wireless connectivity. The absence of rumble and the low polling rate are particularly disappointing for a "Pro" controller. Additionally, the Hall Effect sensor modules are available separately, which doesn't match the aesthetic of the Tekken 8 edition.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Review
After logging over a hundred hours across multiple platforms and games such as UFO 50, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and Persona 3 Reload, I thoroughly enjoy using this controller. However, the high price point and several caveats prevent it from being perfect. The lack of rumble, dongle requirement, additional cost for Hall Effect sticks, and the polling rate are notable drawbacks. Despite these, the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition is a very good controller with great potential for future improvements.
Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Review Score: 4/5
Update: Added more information about the lack of rumble feature.
