Overwatch 2 is undergoing a major transformation in 2025, exceeding typical content updates with a fundamental gameplay shift: the introduction of hero perks. Nearly nine years after the original Overwatch's debut and two and a half years after Overwatch 2's launch, Season 15 (February 18th) will revolutionize gameplay.
Game director Aaron Keller and the Blizzard team announced sweeping changes, including new collaborations, heroes, and a completely revamped playing experience. This overhaul aims to reignite interest in Overwatch 2, facing stiff competition from titles like NetEase's Marvel Rivals.
Overwatch 2: The Addition of Hero Perks
Each hero will receive two selectable perks—minor and major—awarded at specific points during a match. Minor perks (level 2) subtly enhance base abilities; for example, Orisa's primary fire might refund Heat on critical hits. Major perks significantly alter gameplay, potentially replacing abilities like Orisa's Javelin Spin with her Barrier, or enhancing her Energy Javelin with increased speed, knockback, and piercing capabilities. These are mutually exclusive choices, mirroring Heroes of the Storm's talent system.
Stadium: A New Round-Based Mode
Season 16 (April) introduces Stadium, a 5v5, best-of-7 round-based competitive mode. Between rounds, players spend currency to upgrade their heroes, enhancing attributes or unlocking significant ability changes (e.g., flying Wraith Form for Reaper). While perks aren't initially included in Stadium, future integration isn't ruled out. This mode also features a unique third-person perspective, offering a different battlefield view. Stadium launches with 14 heroes, with more planned for the future.
Overwatch Classic: The Return of GOATs
Blizzard continues experimenting with 6v6 modes, including a competitive open queue (two tanks max) and Overwatch Classic. Mid-Season 16, Overwatch Classic revives the "GOATs" meta from Overwatch 1, featuring the three-tank, three-support team compositions.
New Heroes: Freja and Aqua
Season 16 introduces Freja, a crossbow-wielding bounty hunter, followed later by Aqua, a water-bending hero. More details on Aqua will be revealed later in the year.
The Return of Loot Boxes
Loot boxes are making a comeback, obtainable solely through free methods like the battle pass and weekly rewards. Transparency is key; players will see the odds of receiving specific items before opening a box.
Competitive Updates
Season 15 resets competitive ranks, introducing new rewards like Galactic weapon skins. Season 16 adds hero bans and map voting to competitive play.
Cosmetics and Collaborations
Numerous new cosmetics are planned, including Mythic skins for Zenyatta (Season 15), Widowmaker, Juno, Mercy, Reaper, and D.Va. A second collaboration with LE SSERAFIM is also coming in March.
Competitive Expansion
Overwatch 2's competitive scene is expanding with a new stage in China, increased live events, Face.it league integration, and a new tournament system.
