CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Ciri will take on a major role in The Witcher 4, marking a natural evolution in the series' narrative arc. Executive producer Malgorzata Mitrega highlighted that the transition from Geralt to Ciri aligns with both the game's development trajectory and the lore established by Andrzej Sapkowski in his original works.
Mitrega pointed out that Geralt's story reached its conclusion in The Witcher 3, setting the stage for Ciri to step into the spotlight. With her character's rich development across the books and games, Ciri offers a wealth of creative opportunities for the developers. Director Sebastian Kalemba noted that Ciri's younger age allows players greater freedom to mold her character, a flexibility not possible with the more established Geralt.
Interestingly, the idea of shifting the protagonist from Geralt to Ciri has been in discussion for nearly a decade, underscoring CD Projekt Red's long-term vision of Ciri as Geralt's successor. Kalemba also mentioned that the new challenges and perspectives Ciri will face are poised to launch an epic new saga within the Witcher universe.
Actor Doug Cockle, known for voicing Geralt, expressed his support for this change, praising Ciri's potential as a central character. While Geralt will still appear in the game, his role will be less prominent, highlighting the fresh narrative perspective that Ciri brings to the forefront.
