Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Confronting Lu Bu is a significant challenge. My own battle lasted over an hour! However, the rewards are substantial. Bragging rights are one obvious benefit. Beyond that, certain scenarios force the encounter. If you align with Shu or Wei, a clash with Lu Bu is unavoidable in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Defeating him at Hulao Gate unlocks the "The Strongest" trophy. Even better, post-game victory grants you the game's ultimate weapon: the halberd.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Preparation is key. Equip a multi-hit sword to stagger Lu Bu effectively. Battle Arts with low Bravery costs, quick activation, and wide ranges are crucial. My arsenal included Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Boost your survivability with accessories like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell; his attacks are brutal. A weapon that generates Bravery on Perfect Evades is also highly recommended, as evading will be your primary Bravery source.
Initially, Lu Bu rides Red Hare. This phase is relatively straightforward. He charges around, occasionally pausing. Exploit these pauses to unleash your Battle Arts, then retreat. His attacks, aside from Red Hare's devastating jump attack, have limited area of effect, making evasion manageable. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real fight begins.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu's aggression intensifies. His attacks are rapid, and he moves swiftly across the battlefield. A red aura signals an unstoppable combo. Evade his charges—he typically attacks in sets of three. Watch out for his grab attack; it's devastating, but easily evaded.
His most dangerous move involves an orange glow. He unleashes three powerful arrows, repeatedly. Absconding Slash, a ranged Battle Art, is your best counter. Close-range arts are suicide. Keep your Musou gauge charged for an invincibility shield during critical moments.
Lu Bu is surprisingly juggle-able during this phase. Sustained attacks quickly charge your Battle Arts, accelerating Fortitude meter depletion. Maintain close proximity for better reaction time. Remember: evasion is your best friend.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
Upon reaching a certain health threshold, Lu Bu enters Musou Rage. This final phase is relentless. He becomes un-staggerable, unleashing a constant barrage of attacks. Your objective: deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use every tool at your disposal: Musou attacks, Battle Arts—everything to overwhelm him. Failing to break his Fortitude before his Musou attack restarts the phase. Success here brings victory over this seemingly insurmountable foe.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
