Become Aran de Lir, a blacksmith and warrior whose life takes a tragic turn, thrusting him into a quest of epic proportions. He discovers a magical hammer, granting him access to the Forge of the Gods, where he’ll craft unique weapons to stand against Queen Nereia’s formidable army. Prepare for a 60-70 hour adventure.
Journey through a breathtaking yet brutal fantasy world teeming with magical creatures – trolls, elementals, and more – roaming enchanted forests and vibrant fields. The game's visual style is striking, boasting exaggerated proportions reminiscent of Blizzard's iconic designs: massive limbs, imposing buildings, and a monumental environment that creates a sense of awe. Encounter unique enemies, including stocky soldiers reminiscent of Gears of War’s Locust, adding a distinctive flavor to this rich landscape.
Blades of Fire offers an unparalleled weapon crafting system and a revolutionary combat mechanic, setting it apart from typical action games:
Forge your destiny through a multi-stage process. Begin by selecting a basic weapon template, then meticulously customize its size, shape, material, and other parameters, directly impacting its performance. Conclude the creation with a skill-based mini-game, precisely controlling the strength, length, and angle of your strikes to determine the weapon's quality and durability. For convenience, instantly recreate previously forged weapons.
Develop a deep emotional connection with your creations. The developers encourage players to forge bonds with their weapons, using the same gear throughout their journey. While death means leaving your weapon behind, it can be retrieved upon returning to the location. Carry up to four weapons, seamlessly switching between them during combat. Each weapon boasts unique stances for slashing, thrusting, and more.
Forget scavenging – you'll craft every weapon. Choose from seven distinct weapon types, from halberds to dual axes. Master the directional combat system, targeting the face, torso, left, or right. Outsmart enemies guarding their faces by attacking their bodies, and vice versa. Some bosses, like trolls, possess additional health bars vulnerable only after severing a limb – cut off that club-wielding arm, or even destroy their face for a temporary blinding effect. Stamina, crucial for attacks and dodges, doesn't regenerate automatically; hold the block button to replenish it.
Reviewers acknowledge potential shortcomings, such as uneven difficulty and a forging system that may require some adjustment. However, the unique setting and combat system effectively compensate for these minor flaws.
Blades of Fire launches May 22, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Epic Games Store).
