The Nintendo Switch 2 continues the tradition of featuring a Zelda game, but this time with a surprising twist. During the recent Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that Koei Tecmo is developing a new addition to the Hyrule Warriors series: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Fans won't have to wait long, as it's set to launch this winter.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment introduces a fresh narrative centered around the ancient history depicted in Tears of the Kingdom. The game features a cast of iconic characters, including Zelda, Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The storyline delves into Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last of the Zonai tribe—Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia—to combat the formidable forces led by Ganondorf.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, from Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding her magic, Rauru with his distinctive sword-spear, to a brief look at other Sacred Stone wielders in action.
This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The latter served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and was noted for its engaging narrative that slightly deviated from expectations. Age of Calamity earned a 9/10 from us, praised as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish." It will be intriguing to see if Age of Imprisonment also takes a creative detour in its storytelling.
