Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who initially reported hearing from his manager that Evans would be returning. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans himself, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains firm. Evans reiterated his retirement to Esquire, stating he's "happily retired" and tired of addressing recurring rumors about his return.
While Evans has returned to the superhero genre, appearing as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role significantly different from his central Captain America arc.
The MCU's future is currently somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors' portrayal of Kang, intended as the MCU's next Thanos-level villain, has been cut, leading to speculation and reshuffling of plans.
Robert Downey Jr. is now confirmed to play Doctor Doom as the main antagonist in Avengers: Doomsday. This news fueled rumors of other original Avengers returning, but currently, no further returns have been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also reportedly appearing.
