Monster Hunter Wilds has surged past 1 million concurrent players on Steam, despite facing a barrage of mixed reviews. Dive in to uncover more about the game's PC performance and the challenges it currently faces.
Monster Hunter Wilds Grapples with Launch Issues
Monster Hunter Wilds Earns Mixed Reviews on Steam
Despite the mixed reception on Steam, Monster Hunter (MH) Wilds has impressively surpassed 1 million concurrent players. According to SteamDB, MH Wilds hit an all-time peak of 1,384,608 concurrent players, eclipsing the records set by its predecessors, Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise, with peaks of 334,684 and 231,360 players respectively. Yet, the game currently holds a "Mixed" rating on its Steam page, with only 57% of its 54,669 reviews being positive. Many negative reviews highlight the game's suboptimal PC optimization and various performance hiccups.
Capcom Tackles PC Performance Woes
In response to the outcry over MH Wilds' PC performance, Capcom has stepped up to address these concerns. The official Monster Hunter Status account took to Twitter (X) on February 28, 2025, to communicate solutions to the game's numerous issues. They directed players to the MH Wilds support website, which provides detailed advice on troubleshooting, including updating video/graphics drivers, ensuring the latest Windows updates are installed, and performing a clean installation of the video driver set.
For unresolved issues, Capcom advised players to visit the "Official Monster Hunter Wilds Troubleshooting & Issue Reporting Thread" on the Steam community page, where additional steps are outlined to help resolve these problems.
Game-breaking Bug Halts Story Progression
A critical bug is currently preventing players from advancing in the story, particularly during Main Mission: Chapter 5-2 "A World Turned Upside Down," where a vital NPC fails to appear. Monster Hunter Status acknowledged this issue on Twitter (X) on March 2, 2025, and confirmed that their team is actively working on a fix.
Further issues include the "Grill a Meal" and "Ingredient Center" features not unlocking despite meeting the necessary criteria, along with problems accessing the Smithy. The development team has addressed these concerns and deployed hotfixes and updates across various platforms.
Character Customization Locked Behind Paywall
MH Wilds introduces a microtransaction model for character customization, requiring players to purchase the Monster Hunter Wilds - Character Edit Voucher Three-Voucher Pack for $6.00 to change their character and Palico's appearance up to three times. This pack is available across all digital storefronts. Players can still alter hair, eyebrow color, facial color, makeup, and clothing without additional cost, but more extensive changes necessitate the voucher. A separate $10 voucher allows for three edits to both character and Palico.
While these microtransactions weren't part of the MH Wilds testing phase, Capcom had previously announced their inclusion. As a gesture of goodwill, Capcom is offering a single character edit voucher for free.
Monster Hunter Wilds is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for the latest updates by checking out our article below!
