"Nintendo Switch 2's C Button Function Revealed [UPDATE]"

by Andrew Apr 24,2025

Updated on January 14: The original version of this article linked to a different Discord server, also called "Nintendo Switch 2." The link has been changed to reflect the real source of the datamining effort. The original story is as follows.

Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2's rumored C button may be used for chat functionality.
  • Recent datamining efforts suggest the Switch 2 will support a group and voice chat feature code-named Campus.
  • The next Nintendo console will reportedly be officially revealed on January 16.

The C button rumored to be a feature of the Nintendo Switch 2 might be dedicated to chat functionality, according to a new report. This insight could illuminate one of the most intriguing aspects of the hardware for Nintendo's upcoming console.

Since late 2024, the Switch 2 has been the subject of numerous leaks. Industry experts believe these leaks are due to the console entering mass production around that time. All these unofficial glimpses of the device have shown that it includes an additional button compared to its predecessor. This button, marked with a dark gray "C," is depicted on the right Joy-Con, positioned just below the home button. However, until recently, the purpose of this mysterious button remained unknown.

Datamining efforts focused on the latest version of the Switch OS have led to a theory about the C button's function. A report from a burgeoning Discord server dedicated to the Switch 2 indicates that Nintendo's latest firmware includes references to a feature code-named "Campus." This feature is believed to be associated with group and voice chat support for Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscribers.

Nintendo Switch 2 Will Reportedly Support Screen Sharing

The same source also suggests that Campus will enable screen sharing and allow chat groups to include up to 12 users. Given that the codename begins with a "C," it's plausible that the new button on the Switch 2 might be related to this chat feature, rather than the feature itself. This development challenges the popular fan theory that the C button could be used for casting the Switch 2's screen to another device.

Chat Support Isn't Exactly in Line With the Switch's Kid-Friendly Design

Since group and voice chats require internet connectivity, it's likely that if the Switch 2 includes these features, they would be exclusive to NSO subscribers. However, this remains speculative, especially considering Nintendo's move away from such functionalities with the original Switch. By not including chat features, the Switch maintains a more kid-friendly environment, and reintroducing a feature like the Miiverse text chat could raise concerns that Nintendo might prefer to avoid.

Whether the much-anticipated console indeed features a C button—and what its function will be—may soon be revealed. Multiple sources indicate that the Switch 2 will be officially announced on Thursday, January 16.
