Overwatch 2 Season 15: A Resurgence in the Face of Adversity?
Overwatch 2, launched two and a half years after its predecessor, initially faced a storm of criticism, even becoming the worst-reviewed game on Steam in August 2023. The shift to a free-to-play model, the cancellation of the highly anticipated PvE Hero mode, and ongoing monetization controversies fueled widespread negativity.
However, the tide may be turning. Season 15 has sparked a noticeable improvement in player sentiment, pushing the Steam user review rating from "mostly negative" to "mixed." A significant 43% of the 5,325 reviews submitted in the last 30 days were positive, a remarkable shift considering the game's history.
This positive swing is largely attributed to the substantial changes introduced in Season 15. While the roadmap continues to deliver new content, core gameplay mechanics have undergone a significant overhaul. The addition of hero perks and the return of loot boxes have resonated positively with players.

Recent positive reviews reflect this change: "They just released Overwatch 2," one player wrote. "The recent update is what the game should always have been before corporate greed got in the way." Another added, "For once, I must come to Overwatch's defense and say they really have stepped up their game...Going back to what worked in Overwatch 1 while introducing new and fun mechanics." The mention of a competitor, Marvel Rivals, highlights the competitive landscape now facing Overwatch 2.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller acknowledged the impact of Marvel Rivals' success (40 million downloads since December), stating that the competition has forced Blizzard to adopt a more aggressive and innovative approach, moving beyond "playing it safe."
While it's premature to declare a full comeback, the improved Steam reviews and a near doubling of peak concurrent players on the platform to 60,000 (note: player numbers on other platforms are unavailable) suggest a significant resurgence. This contrasts sharply with Marvel Rivals' current peak concurrent player count of 305,816 on Steam. The future remains uncertain, but Season 15 has undeniably injected new life into Overwatch 2.
