Apex Legends developer Respawn has recently canceled an incubation project, resulting in layoffs of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. The news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, citing a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned being part of the unannounced project for a year before its cancellation.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer FPS project. The project was developed by a team previously working on a Star Wars FPS at Respawn, which was canceled last year. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, a source familiar with the project described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has confirmed on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year saw EA cut 50 jobs at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. The trend continued nearly a year ago with the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS. As a result of these cuts, around two dozen Respawn employees were also let go. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers reassigned to other projects and further layoffs of an unknown number of key personnel.
IGN has contacted Electronic Arts for a statement on these developments.
