Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise double-whammy for fans of the Ninja Gaiden franchise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," promising a thrilling evolution of the series.
Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era Begins
Developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series' return after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 retains the series' signature challenging yet rewarding gameplay. The collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames promises a blend of classic Ninja Gaiden action with PlatinumGames' signature high-speed, dynamic combat.
The game introduces a new protagonist, Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja. Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character who can stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic hero. While Yakumo takes center stage, Ryu Hayabusa remains a significant figure, serving as a major challenge and mentor for the new protagonist. Ryu will also be playable.
A New Combat Style
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces the "Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style," a new combat style unique to Yakumo, complementing his "Raven Style." While distinct from Ryu's fighting techniques, the developers assure fans that the action will feel authentically Ninja Gaiden. The game aims to maintain the series' challenging gameplay while incorporating PlatinumGames' dynamic combat style.
The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase. More details will be revealed soon.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic
Simultaneously, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title, is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and included with Xbox Game Pass. This version features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, including Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel. The remake aims to provide a modern experience for both veteran and new players.
The release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black serves as a satisfying appetizer for fans eagerly awaiting Ninja Gaiden 4. Both titles promise a thrilling return to the world of intense ninja action.
