Localthunk, the creator of the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently intervened in a controversy sparked by a moderator's stance on AI-generated art within the game's subreddit community. The situation unfolded when DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of an NSFW Balatro subreddit, announced that AI-generated art would not be banned, provided it was properly tagged and claimed. This decision was purportedly made after discussions with Playstack, the game's publisher.
However, Localthunk quickly clarified their position, stating on Bluesky that neither they nor Playstack condone AI-generated art. They further elaborated in a statement on the subreddit, emphasizing their opposition to AI art due to its potential harm to artists. Localthunk confirmed the removal of DrTankHead from the moderation team and announced a new policy banning AI-generated images on the subreddit, with plans to update the rules and FAQ accordingly.
Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the previous rule against "unlabeled AI content" may have been unclear, leading to misunderstandings. They committed to revising the language to better reflect their stance. Meanwhile, DrTankHead, after being removed as a moderator, stated in the NSFW Balatro subreddit that they did not intend to make it AI-centric but were considering a designated day for posting non-NSFW AI-generated art.
The incident highlights broader industry tensions surrounding generative AI, which has been a contentious topic due to ethical concerns, rights issues, and the quality of AI-generated content. Despite these challenges, major companies like EA, Capcom, and Activision continue to explore AI's potential in game development, though with varying degrees of success and public reception.
