'Fallouts Like That Happen, It's Just Part of the Deal' — Mass Effect 1 and 2 Composer Jack Wall Discusses Why He Failed to Return for Mass Effect 3

by Logan Mar 31,2025

In a revealing interview with The Guardian, composer Jack Wall opened up about his absence from the soundtrack of Mass Effect 3, a decision that left many fans of the series shocked and disappointed. Wall, who had previously crafted the iconic 80s sci-fi inspired soundtracks for Mass Effect in 2007 and its critically acclaimed sequel Mass Effect 2 in 2010, shared insights into his falling out with Casey Hudson, the then-chief of Mass Effect's development at BioWare.

Wall's contributions to the series, particularly his work on Mass Effect 2, have been celebrated by fans and critics alike. The game is often hailed as one of the greatest action role-playing games ever created, with Wall's score, featuring the memorable 'Suicide Mission,' being a standout highlight. Despite the success and a Bafta nomination, Wall's relationship with Hudson deteriorated, leading to his departure before the development of Mass Effect 3 in 2012.

“Casey was not particularly happy with me at the end,” Wall admitted, reflecting on the tensions that arose during the final stages of Mass Effect 2. He described the creation of the 'Suicide Mission' as a monumental challenge, a "mind-f\*\*\*ing thing," where he had to navigate the project with minimal support as the team scrambled to meet deadlines. Despite the struggles, Wall expressed pride in the final product, which he considers one of the best ending sequences in gaming history.

While Wall remained somewhat vague about the specifics of his falling out with Hudson, he acknowledged that such creative tensions are an inherent part of the industry. "Fallouts like that happen, it's just part of the deal," he remarked, indicating that this was a rare but significant hiccup in his otherwise successful career.

Following his departure from the Mass Effect series, Wall went on to compose for other major titles, including the Call of Duty franchise, with his most recent work being the soundtrack for Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is currently focused on developing the next installment in the Mass Effect series, following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The identity of the new composer for the upcoming Mass Effect game has yet to be announced.
