Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of turn-based combat and real-time elements. Drawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Persona, the game aims to create a fresh experience within the genre.
The game's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the game's influences, highlighting a desire to create a high-fidelity turn-based RPG. He cited Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveler as stylistic inspirations, emphasizing a personal drive to fill a perceived gap in the market.
Expedition 33's core gameplay revolves around preventing the "Paintress" from unleashing death. Combat blends turn-based command input with real-time reactions to enemy attacks, drawing comparisons to titles like Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars. The game's unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, promise a visually stunning and engaging experience.
Broche clarified that while Persona influenced aspects like camera movement and dynamic menus, the Final Fantasy series (specifically FF VIII, IX, and X) had a more profound impact on the game's overall design. He stressed that the game is not a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal experiences with these classic titles.
The open world allows for seamless party member switching and the use of unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche expressed a desire for players to experiment with unconventional strategies and character builds, further emphasizing the game's focus on player agency and creative freedom.
The development team aims to create a game that resonates with players in the same way classic titles impacted them. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
