Capcom's latest title, despite achieving impressive online player counts (currently ranking 6th on Steam's most played list), is facing significant backlash due to its subpar technical performance on PC. Digital Foundry's in-depth analysis corroborates these criticisms, revealing a multitude of performance issues.
Their testing highlights several key problems. Shader pre-compilation times are excessively long, ranging from approximately 9 minutes on a high-end 9800X3D system to over 30 minutes on a Ryzen 3600. Texture quality is disappointing, even at the "High" setting, with noticeable deficiencies even on an RTX 4060 at 1440p resolution using balanced DLSS. Frame time spikes are prevalent, impacting smoothness, even on more powerful hardware like an RTX 4070 (12GB). Poor texture quality persists across various GPU configurations.
For GPUs with 8GB of VRAM, Digital Foundry recommends reducing texture quality to "Medium" to alleviate stuttering and frame time spikes. However, even this compromise results in less-than-ideal visuals. Rapid camera movements consistently trigger noticeable frame drops, though less severe with slower movements. Critically, the core frame time issues remain regardless of texture settings.
Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia attributes these problems to inefficient data streaming, placing an excessive burden on the GPU during decompression. This is particularly detrimental to budget GPUs, leading to pronounced frame time spikes. He advises against purchasing the game for those with 8GB GPUs and expresses reservations even for more powerful cards like the RTX 4070.
Performance is especially poor on Intel GPUs, with the Arc 770 achieving only 15-20 frames per second, accompanied by missing textures and other graphical artifacts. While high-end systems can partially mitigate these issues, consistent smooth gameplay remains elusive. Currently, optimizing settings without a considerable sacrifice in visual fidelity proves nearly impossible.
