New Sony Patent Could Use AI and a Camera Pointed at Your Fingers to Work Out What Button You’ll Press Next

by Olivia Feb 28,2025

Sony's latest patent hints at a potential game-changer for future PlayStation consoles: AI-powered latency reduction. The patent, WO2025010132, focuses on optimizing "timed release of user commands" by predicting player inputs.

Sony's current PlayStation 5 Pro, featuring PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), already tackles upscaling. However, technologies like frame generation introduce latency, impacting responsiveness. Competitors AMD and Nvidia have addressed this with Radeon Anti-Lag and Nvidia Reflex, respectively. Sony's proposed solution aims to provide a comparable, perhaps superior, alternative.

The patent details a system combining a machine learning AI model with external sensors, potentially a camera monitoring controller inputs, to anticipate player actions. This predictive capability aims to minimize the delay between input and in-game response. The patent also suggests integrating this functionality directly into controller buttons, potentially leveraging analog inputs.

While the patent's specific implementation in a hypothetical PlayStation 6 remains uncertain, it demonstrates Sony's commitment to mitigating latency issues associated with advanced rendering techniques like FSR 3 and DLSS 3. The technology would particularly benefit fast-paced games requiring high frame rates and minimal lag, such as competitive shooters. Whether this technology will see the light of day in future hardware remains to be seen.
